Track-mounted stump grinder working a north Atlanta yard

Quick answer

What is stump grinding?

Stump grinding uses a machine with a rotating carbide-tipped wheel to shred a tree stump 4–8 inches below the soil surface. The roots are left in place to decompose naturally over 6–12 months. It's faster, cheaper, and less invasive than digging the whole root ball out, and it's the right choice for 95% of residential jobs in metro Atlanta.

The process

Four steps. Same on every job.

We run the same four steps on every job, back yard in Alpharetta or front yard in Woodstock, the process doesn't change.

01

Site assessment.

The stump is inspected, diameter measured at ground level, visible utilities (gas markers, irrigation valves, septic) checked, and access constraints (fence width, slope, proximity to structures) noted.

02

Equipment positioning.

Walk-behind grinder for tight spaces (36-inch gates, side yards). Tow-behind for larger stumps and open access. Plywood placed to protect driveways, walkways, and lawn from grinder treads.

03

Grinding.

Carbide-tipped wheel shreds the stump 4–8 inches below grade in passes. 12-inch stump: 15–30 minutes. 24-inch: 45–75 minutes. Visible root flare within the immediate work area is also ground.

04

Cleanup.

Wood chips raked into the hole or piled for haul-away. Surrounding lawn raked clean. Driveway swept. Photo confirmation sent before payment.

Equipment

Owned, not rented.

Walk-behind grinder.

For tight access, fits through 36-inch gates and alongside structures. Used for back-yard stumps, side-yard work, and any job where the tow-behind cannot reach.

Tow-behind grinder.

For larger stumps and open access, front yards, commercial properties, multi-stump jobs. Higher horsepower means faster work on hardwood stumps over 18 inches.

All equipment is owned and maintained, no rentals, no borrowed gear, no surprises showing up on-site.

FAQ

Stump grinding FAQ.

How much does stump grinding cost?
Every job is different. Quotes are free, in person, no obligation, we come out, look at the work, and give you the price on the spot. We don't quote stumps over the phone or from photos; the on-site look is the quote.
How deep does the grinding go?
4–8 inches below grade by default. That's deep enough to resod, plant a garden, or lay mulch. Deeper grinding (for new tree planting or construction footing) is available on request, let us know in advance.
What happens to the wood chips?
Grinding produces a pile of chips roughly twice the volume of the original stump. Chips can be left for use as free mulch in flower beds (the most common choice), or hauled away as a debris-removal add-on.
Will grinding damage the lawn or driveway?
No. Plywood protects driveways and walkways. The grinder leaves a clean hole where the stump was, minimal lawn disturbance. The area is raked and cleaned before the crew leaves.
Can stumps near a fence, driveway, or foundation be ground?
Yes, that's most residential work. Walk-behind grinders fit through 36-inch gates and alongside structures. Clearance is assessed on every job, and 811 should be called before any work near suspected utilities.
Do I need to be home during the job?
Not necessarily. As long as we have access to the stump (gate code or unlocked side gate) and the quote is approved, the work can be completed while you're away. Photos are sent on completion before payment.
How long does it take?
A 12-inch stump takes 15–30 minutes once the grinder is set up. 24-inch stumps run 45–75 minutes. Anything over 30 inches can take 2+ hours. Multi-stump visits mean one drive fee, not several, most full-yard jobs done in under three hours.
Are there discounts for multiple stumps?
Yes. Each additional stump after the first costs less, same drive, same setup, same equipment. Multi-stump visits run meaningfully less per stump than the same stumps booked as separate jobs.
Is stump grinding the same as stump removal?
No. Grinding shreds the stump 4–8 inches below grade and leaves the roots to decompose naturally, fast, cheap, minimal disturbance. Full root-ball removal is a different job (more invasive, 2–3× the cost) and is only needed for foundations, pools, or replanting in the exact same spot. We grind. If you need full removal, we'll point you to a tree-service contractor.
What tree species are common in north Atlanta?
Most common: white oak, red oak, loblolly pine, hickory, sweetgum, dogwood, magnolia, maple, and tulip poplar. Each behaves differently, which is one reason we quote on-site instead of by phone.
